Extreme Compress PDF — Free Online Tool
Extreme Compress PDF is a free online tool designed for maximum file size reduction when a normal compress step is not enough. Large scanned documents, presentation exports and multi-page reports often exceed email or portal limits. This tool aggressively reduces those files by rendering each page at a lower resolution and encoding it as a strongly compressed JPEG image, then assembling a new, much smaller PDF entirely in your browser.
Unlike light compression that only re-encodes embedded images while trying to keep text selectable, Extreme mode prioritises the smallest possible download. You can choose between Maximum, Extreme and Ultra levels, and optionally convert pages to grayscale for an extra size cut. Everything runs locally on your device — no account, no upload to a server, and no watermark on the output.

When to use Extreme Compress PDF
Use this tool when you need the file to pass a hard size limit: email attachments, government or university upload portals, mobile messaging, or archival storage where space is limited. It is especially effective on image-heavy PDFs such as scanned paper, photo reports and slide decks exported as PDF. If you still need selectable text and vector sharpness, try the standard Compress PDF tool first and only switch to Extreme when the result is still too large.
Step-by-step instructions
- Open the Extreme Compress PDF tool from the button above or from the PDF Tools hub.
- Drop your PDF file into the drop zone or choose it from your device. Processing stays on your computer or phone.
- Select a compression level: Maximum for the smallest size, Extreme for a strong balance, or Ultra when you need slightly better clarity.
- Optionally enable Convert to grayscale to remove colour data and shrink the file further.
- Click Extreme Compress PDF. Wait while each page is rendered and re-encoded. Progress is shown on screen.
- Download the new PDF and compare the size with the original. Re-run with a different level if needed.
How extreme compression works
Each page is drawn onto a canvas at a reduced scale, then saved as JPEG with a low quality setting. The JPEG images are embedded into a new PDF document with the original page dimensions so layout proportions stay the same. Because pages become images, text is no longer selectable or searchable, and zooming in will show pixelation. In exchange you often get dramatically smaller files — sometimes 70–90% smaller on scanned documents. Grayscale mode discards colour channels before JPEG encoding, which helps further on colour scans.
Supported formats and limits
Input and output are standard PDF files (.pdf). There is no artificial server-side size limit; practical limits depend on your device memory and browser. Very large multi-hundred-page scans may take longer on mobile. Works on current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop and mobile.
Privacy and security
Files never leave your device for this tool. We do not operate an upload endpoint. Temporary canvas and PDF data are released when you leave the page or close the tab. The site is served over HTTPS. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Pricing and workflow
Price: Free forever — no registration, no daily limits and no watermark on the output. Workflow: open tool → add PDF → choose level and optional grayscale → process in browser → download. Once the PDF libraries are cached, many operations work offline. Ideal for privacy-conscious users and repeated batch work on personal documents.
Frequently asked questions
Is Extreme Compress PDF free?
Yes. Unlimited use, no registration and no watermark on the downloaded file.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Compression runs 100% in your browser. Your PDF stays on your device.
How is this different from normal Compress PDF?
Normal Compress PDF re-compresses images while trying to keep text readable and selectable. Extreme Compress PDF rasterises whole pages for maximum size reduction; text becomes part of the image.
Will the text still be searchable?
Usually not. Extreme mode turns pages into images, so OCR or text selection will not work on the result unless you run OCR separately later.
Can I use it on mobile?
Yes, on modern mobile browsers. Large files may need more time and free memory.
Does it add a watermark?
No. The output contains only your content.
